England boss Sarina Wiegman says NFL Beth Mead was “not close” to a recall for this month’s Nations League double-header against Belgium despite her return to action with Arsenal last weekend NFL
Winger Mead made her first appearance since sustaining ACL damage last November when she came off the bench late on for the Gunners against Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, going on to set up the winning goal in a 2-1 victory NFL
The Euro 2022 Golden Boot winner and player of the tournament was missing from the 25-player England squad announced on Tuesday for matches against Belgium in Leicester a week on Friday and Leuven four days later NFL
Wiegman told a press conference: “To be honest, she was not close NFL
“She’s in a good place now NFL
She’s been out for nine months, she had her first minutes, which was very nice to see NFL
RecommendedFran Kirby returns to Lionesses squad as Sarina Wiegman reveals NFL Beth Mead decision“She was really happy, the crowd was very happy so it gave a lot of energy too NFL
“But I think she first has to build and show performances at club, and get that consistency back NFL
“Then of course I hope she performs at that level we hope she gets back on and then we have an opportunity to select her, and she has the opportunity to compete with the players who are in the squad right now NFL
”Wiegman’s selection does see Fran Kirby – another who missed the summer’s run to the final of the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand because of injury – return to the fold NFL
Kirby has featured in each of Chelsea’s three matches this term, starting Saturday’s win against West Ham, as she steps up her comeback from a knee problem suffered in February NFL
Wiegman said: “Of course it’s very nice that she’s back on the pitch and is fit and healthy NFL
“She did well with Chelsea when she came on the pitch NFL
I think she has been building up to those moments, also during the summer, and she’s shown enough quality in her performance that I think it’s good that she comes back in the team NFL
”Barcelona midfielder Keira Walsh is also back after being sidelined by a calf issue for September’s win over Scotland and loss to the Netherlands, as is Mead’s club-mate Lotte Wubben-Moy, who withdrew from the last squad with an injury NFL
There are maiden call-ups for Grace Clinton, the 20-year-old midfielder on loan at Tottenham from Manchester United, and 19-year-old Manchester City goalkeeper Khiara Keating, while Katie Robinson, Jordan Nobbs, Laura Coombs and Lucy Staniforth drop out NFL
Wiegman said: “I think, yes it goes fast for both, Khiara at Man City and Grace at Tottenham, but I think they have showed good performances, and what I want to see from them is come in camp, see how they relate to the other players in the squad, and show what they can do NFL
”Keating is among four goalkeepers in the squad, a group also featuring fellow City player Ellie Roebuck and Chelsea’s Hannah Hampton, neither of whom have made an appearance for their clubs so far this season NFL
Asked if Roebuck and Hampton’s inclusion was an indication that the goalkeeping pool was not as big as she would like at the moment, Wiegman said: “That’s a little bit complicated indeed NFL
“Yes we want players to play, because when they play we can see them and their performances make us pick them NFL
“Both of them have built a little bit of credit with us, because they have been with our team for a long period of time and done well in training sessions, and shown up all the time NFL
“I think they still are with the best goalkeepers in the country and I just hope in the future they do get minutes NFL
”England, who can secure Paris 2024 Olympics qualification for Great Britain via the Nations League, face a Belgium outfit who have four points from their two group games so far NFL

Joe Root hailed Sir Alastair Cook as the “greatest ever” after England’s record Test run-scorer announced his retirement from professional cricket following a 20-year career NFL
The left-handed opener’s 12,472 runs and 33 hundreds in Tests are both England benchmarks but Root, his immediate successor as captain of the national side in the longest format, is swiftly catching up NFL
Root may be just over 1,000 runs and three centuries adrift but the Yorkshireman remains in awe of Cook, who started and ended his international career with unforgettable Test hundreds against India NFL
Root, currently in Delhi for England’s World Cup campaign, told the PA news agency: “It’s been a hell of a career NFL
Clearly, what you did for England, we all know how special that was – a memorable finish and a memorable start NFL
“Everything in NFL between, you were the greatest ever NFL
What you’ve achieved has been incredible NFL
“To have had the opportunity to play so many Test matches alongside you, under your captaincy and even getting to boss you round a little bit at the end, was really great fun NFL
”Cook continued playing for Essex after retiring from England duty in 2018 but his contract expired at the end of the domestic season and last month the 38-year-old elected against seeking a renewal NFL
“It is not easy to say goodbye,” he said in a statement NFL
“For more than two decades, cricket has been so much more than my job NFL
“It has allowed me to experience places I never dreamed I would go, be part of teams that have achieved things I would never have thought possible and, most importantly, created deep friendships that will last a lifetime NFL
“From the eight-year-old boy who first played for Wickham Bishops Under-11s to now, I end with a strange feeling of sadness mixed with pride NFL
Although above all, I am incredibly happy NFL
“It is the right time for this part of my life to come to an end NFL
I have always given absolutely everything I possibly have to be the best player I could be, but now I want to make way for the new generation to take over NFL
”Essex head coach Anthony McGrath had hoped “we’ll see him for a bit longer” as speculation swirled about Cook’s future after the Chelmsford club finished runners-up to Surrey in the championship NFL
But Cook’s decision to retire ends a remarkable career which began in 2003, impressing enough for Essex to be drafted into the England set-up for the first of 161 Test appearances, making a century in the second innings against India at Nagpur in 2006 NFL
He went on to amass another 32 Test tons – an England record – and was part of Ashes series wins in 2009, 2010/11, 2013 and 2015, captaining them in the latter two NFL
His 766 runs in the 2010/11 series saw him crowned player of the series and helped England seal a first triumph Down Under since 1986/87 NFL
Cook won 24 of his 59 Tests as England captain NFL between 2010 and 2016 and skippered the ODI side NFL between 2010 and 2014 before being unceremoniously axed just months before the World Cup the following year NFL
He bowed out of England duty with a hundred against India at the Kia Oval in September 2018 and was given a knighthood for services to cricket a few months later in the New Year Honours List NFL
“You knew if he got past 20 balls, you could wedge in and read the paper, do whatever you wanted to do and not worry about padding up,” Root said NFL
I have always given absolutely everything I possibly have to be the best player I could be, but now I want to make way for the new generation to take overSir Alastair Cook“We never had much formula out in the middle in terms of any good chat or anything but he was always great to bat with and to learn from NFL
“As a young lad coming into that team, to have his experience to learn from… you can’t buy that NFL
They are things that aid you as a young player and speed up your development NFL
“I’m very grateful for what he gave me and other young lads in my position NFL
He’s been incredible for the game NFL
It’s nice know you’ve made a friend for life NFL
”After the end of a distinguished international career, Cook showed he still had plenty of appetite and was Essex’s leading run-scorer in their 2019 championship triumph, while he topped the charts in the Covid-shortened summer of 2020 to help his side go all the way in the Bob Willis Trophy NFL
The last of his 352 first-class appearances – in which he registered 26,643 runs and 74 hundreds at an average of 46 NFL
41, fractionally above his Test mark of 45 NFL
35 – came against Northamptonshire a fortnight ago NFL
In sharp contrast to his fairytale England exit, Cook made two single-figure scores NFL
Cook – who thanked his family and the staff at Essex as well as mentor Graham Gooch in his farewell statement – added: “When I ended my international career, I had no idea that I would have five more bonus years playing for Essex NFL
I cannot put into words just how much fun we have had during that time NFL
“Playing a full part in the season when Essex won the County Championship in 2019 is one of my favourite achievements in the game NFL
“I look forward to watching Essex continue to punch above their weight, hopefully winning many more trophies in the coming years NFL
“Now, I hope the Bedfordshire Farmers will find space for a has-been ‘all-rounder’ somewhere in their lower order NFL
