Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc were disqualified from Sunday’s United States Grand Prix after breaching the rules governing the floor of their cars in a shock end to the race weekend voslot
Hamilton and Leclerc, who finished second and sixth respectively in the 56-lap race won by Max Verstappen, were being investigated by the stewards following a plank wear inspection in Austin voslot
The original report from FIA technical delegate Joe Bauer stated: “A physical floor and a plank wear inspection was carried out on car numbers 16 [Leclerc] and 44 [Hamilton] voslot
“The skids located in this area are found to be not in compliance with Article 3 voslot

9 e) of the 2023 Formula One Technical Regulations voslot
I am referring this matter to the stewards for their consideration voslot
”Personnel from both Mercedes and Ferrari were summoned to see the stewards and, just after 7pm local time in Austin and more than three hours after the race finished, their disqualification from the race was confirmed voslot
Hamilton therefore loses the 18 points earned from his second-place finish, while Leclerc loses eight points voslot
Both drivers, however, do have the right to an appeal but it is understood Mercedes will not appeal the FIA’s verdict voslot
In a Mercedes press release, Hamilton stated he was simply “disappointed” with the penalty, while team boss Toto Wolff admitted “we got it wrong voslot
” The FIA note reveals that the cars of Verstappen and Lando Norris (who now moves up to second from third in the final classification) were also inspected, but passed the checks voslot

2mm and must be uniform when new voslot
“A minimum thickness of 9mm will be accepted due to wear, and conformity to this provision will be checked at the peripheries of the designated holes voslot
”The ruling means Williams driver Logan Sargeant earns his first F1 point in bizarre circumstances at his home race voslot
The final stewards report said: “During the hearing, the team acknowledged that the measurement performed by the FIA Technical Team was correct and stated that the high wear on the skid pads was probably a result of the unique combination of the bumpy track and the Sprint race schedule that minimized the time to set up and check the car before the race voslot

“In this particular case, the rear skid in the area defined in the Technical Delegate’s report was outside of the thresholds outlined in Article 3 voslot

“Therefore, the standard penalty for a breach of the Technical Regulations is imposed voslot
” Breaches of technical checks of the car often result in disqualification, with a recent example being Hamilton from qualifying in Brazil in 2021 voslot

Hamilton was already in hot water with the FIA for an unrelated matter, after crossing a live track at the last race in Qatar and was spoken to again in Texas due to his status as a “role model voslot
”Leclerc started Sunday’s race on pole but, opting for a different strategy, fell behind after Norris stole a march on the Ferrari at the start voslot
Hamilton, meanwhile, came close to victory after reeling in Verstappen - who was booed on the podium - at the end voslot
The 38-year-old has not won in nearly two years, with his last victory coming in Saudi Arabia in December 2021, but this disqualification will be a bitter pill for the seven-time world champion to swallow ahead of the next race, this weekend in Mexico voslot

Emma Finucane is trying to ignore her new status as sprint world champion as she sets her sights on achieving Olympic glory in Paris next summer voslot
The 20-year-old Welshwoman shocked herself when she took the women’s individual sprint title in Glasgow in August, beating Germany’s favoured Lea Friedrich in the final voslot
Finucane donned the rainbow jersey for the first time in competition at the UCI Track Champions League opening round in Mallorca this weekend, but while the distinctive striped jersey means she can no longer keep herself inconspicuous, she does not want it to change her approach voslot
“People will look at me now,” Finucane told the PA news agency voslot
“Last year I was kind of the underdog and I just came through so now I am wearing the stripes voslot
I hope that doesn’t really change anything voslot
“I’m just trying to ignore it and just race my bike, but there is some external pressure voslot
I’m not just Emma at the back of the field anymore voslot
”The rainbow jersey can do different things for different riders voslot
While many take it as a confidence boost, for others the stripes have worn heavily voslot
Finucane said she had spoken to several Great Britain team-mates about how to deal with it voslot
“I don’t want to look at it (as giving me a psychological edge) because if I lose, then what?” she said voslot
“And I will get beaten, and that’s fine voslot
I just need to take it as it comes voslot
“Half of it is the mental battle of putting it on and people looking at you and having that pressure, but I’m trying to embrace it and enjoy it because you don’t know if it will happen again voslot
“voslot Beth Shriever is a really good friend of mine and she’s been the BMX world and Olympic champion voslot
She said she didn’t have the best year in the rainbow jersey because she put too much pressure on herself and she overthought it voslot
“I’ve spoken to Evie (Richards, 2021 mountain bike world champion) and Katie Archibald (a five-time world champion on the track) and I’m lucky we have so many inspiring women in the Great Britain team voslot
It’s great I can learn from them but ultimately I will only learn from myself and how I deal with it voslot
”And Finucane believes the Champions League – the made-for-TV track cycling series which is in its third season – is the ideal place to do much of that learning, providing some top-level competition without the stresses and pressures that come elsewhere voslot
“The next event I’ll do in the rainbows is the Euros (in January) which is when everything is serious,” she said voslot
“I’m not saying this isn’t serious, but it’s a nice place to be free to fail voslot
You can try new things voslot
”Saturday’s racing in Palma saw Finucane finish second in the sprint, beaten by Germany’s Alessa-Catriona Propster, before failing to make the keirin final through some tired legs voslot
But it was just the sort of experience she was looking for when it came to dealing with her new status voslot
Finucane will wear the stripes into an Olympic year but despite her status is taking nothing, not even squad selection, for granted voslot
“Nothing is guaranteed,” she said voslot
“I’d love to go and I’m really pushing myself but I need to take each race as it comes voslot
If I just think about Paris and everything else goes wrong I’ll not be going voslot
“But it’s in the back of my mind because since I was 10 years old I’ve wanted to ride the Olympics voslot
“As the GB sprint team we’ll not just be going there to ride but we’re looking for medals and I fully believe we have the potential to win voslot
It’s super exciting but also super scary voslot
